Honduras, and specifically the bay islands including Roatan have been on my and Mallory’s lists of places we need to visit forever. Roatan is located about 40 miles off the coast of Honduras and is situated at the southern edge of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The island has been growing in popularity for eco-tourism and for its beautiful beaches and crystal clear water perfect for Roatan Honduras diving.
Roatan is home to one of Honduras’ four international airports. You can fly direct from just 4 US cities (Miami, Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta) as well as Montreal and Toronto during the winter months. So compared to Cozumel and even Belize, Roatan is a little more difficult to get to, but it’s worth the difficulty. You can search for flights to Roatan, Honduras here.
Another way to get to visit Roatan, Honduras is the way we did, on a cruise ship. Roatan has seen a large increase in the number of ships visiting its port with more than half a million passengers arriving each year. When looking for great hotels in Roatan, I noticed that a lot of the hotels have a dive center in their name because the scuba diving in Roatan is fantastic! I think the strength of the dollar is helping here because the hotels and resorts seemed to all be a pretty decent value. There is truly something for everybody when it comes to hotels in Roatan Honduras, these are some of the best hotels in Roatan.
If your reason for visiting Honduras is diving and exploring nature, then look no further than the Tranquilseas Eco Lodge & Dive Center. In addition to being a great spot for the Roatan Honduras diving enthusiast, it was also named the #1 resort for romance in Honduras last year by Trip Advisor and has been listed on their Hall of Fame since 2011. The resort offers all types of activities from diving and ecotours to getting centered with a yoga retreat. At around $300 per night, this is definitely a good value. All-inclusive resorts in Roatan, Honduras would be a great option for families visiting Roatan. While I didn’t find food and drinks to be very expensive while visiting Roatan, having everything included at an all-inclusive resort in Roatan Honduras takes the pressure off of carrying extra cash around for food and drinks while you’re exploring. While there are four all-inclusive resorts in Roatan, only one seems to have decent reviews.
If you’re looking for an all-inclusive resort in Roatan the Mayan Princess Beach & Dive Resort is your best option. Suite style rooms give you plenty of space while you’re there. Being all-inclusive it’s a little more pricey, but the largest room on the property with enough space for 6 people will be about $500 per night. While there aren’t any five-star resorts in Roatan quite yet, there are several four-star luxury hotels in Roatan, Honduras that are very affordable! Below are a couple of the highest rated luxury hotels in Roatan Honduras.
Infinity Bay Spa & Beach Resort has a convenient location right on a pristine beach with crystal clear waters steps from West Bay. The reviews say the resort was clean, the service is fantastic, and the food is delicious. With prices starting around $200/ night and rooms large enough to accommodate 8 guests, the Infinity Bay Spa & Beach Resort is perfect for families visiting Roatan. When I first saw a photo of Xbalanque, I immediately pictured myself staying there. With 12 luxurious suites, you are guaranteed the quiet, private vacation you’ve been longing for. The suites are spacious and full of natural light. There is an amazing pool, and a private beach to lounge on and soak up the Honduran sun. Check prices and availability for Xbalanque.
If you’ve finally mastered the art of maximizing your paid time off, but still only have a limited budget, Roatan is still a great destination for you! Below are several nice budget hotels in Roatan, Honduras.
Nestled away from the hustle and bustle of city and resort life Georphi’s hostel is perfect if you want to get away without breaking the bank. Looking at 5 nights in mid-March, you can get a private room with a private bathroom for $175. That’s not $175 per night, $175 total. The hostel has a restaurant on-site but is only 3.5 miles from Roatan, so you aren’t far if you want to venture into the city. Book your room at Georphi’s!
Similar to Xbalaque above this boutique hotel in Roatan only has 9 rooms, and all of them are suites. The difference is The Beach House Boutique Hotel has prices starting at less than $90/night. Like Belize and Cozumel, the crystal clear waters and diving in Roatan Honduras is what the area is known for, but if you aren’t certified or not up for diving, there is still plenty to do.
Scuba diving has to be at the top of the list for things to do in Roatan Honduras. The warm crystal clear waters, abundant marine life, and colorful coral formations make scuba diving Roatan Honduras one of the top dive destinations on the planet. Since Roatan is in the tropics the weather is pretty good most of the year. You will find the most comfortable weather in the late winter and early spring months (February-April). The summer months are when it is hot and humid with a greater chance for rain and hurricanes.
