Getting to New York

Hi everyone, I’m the Thad Peter has been mentioning in his recent posts. To start I was beyond excited to go on this spur of the moment adventure with one of my close friends but first I had to get to him. So, I caught a flight with Delta First to New York.

Unlike Pete, I didn’t have any delay and had a very uneventful flight. The meal on board was this an Asian noodle with chicken served with a chocolate chip cookie. In my opinion the cookie was the star of the dish due to the entrée being served cold. The flavor was good and I wasn’t sure if that was intend temperature but my thoughts were it would have been better with some heat.

My flight attendant was very attentive and never allowed my glass of whiskey and sprite to get empty. In my book that is some quality service. 😉

Delta Sky Club

Since Pete had a delay and I had roughly a 3 hour layover, the only logical choice was to head to the Sky Club. The lounge was a nice lounge and very busy with travelers. I tried to take a picture of the lounge without being that creepy guy in the corner but I don’t think I did too well with that. Also, the weather in New York was gloomy so I was unable to sit out on their cool sky deck.

The food in the lounge was okay and had three hot options (roasted broccoli, penne, and Swedish meatballs). The food was about subpar with the exception of the meatballs. I must have eaten at least 10 of them and had to cut myself off so I would be able to eat on my next flight.

Delta One New York to London

Delta One is Delta’s international and transcontinental Business Class and their highest level product. They do not currently operate any flights with an international first class option.

It was now time to board my flight to London and I was greeted by a nice facetime from Pete letting me know he was about to board his flight to London as well. At the same time, I was being directed to my seat where I some nice goodies waiting in my seat. The flight attendant then offered me a glass of champagne and nuts as I was looking through my Tumi amenity kit. The seat had lots of leg room and it was nice to have a side table to my right to place things while I was getting comfortable. While I was waiting for everyone else to board, I checked out the entertainment system. It had a nice selection of popular movies to choose from and I decided to watch Deadpool.

I was extremely sleepy and full from meatballs but after looking at the menu I decided to power through the exhaustion. We were able to have all the starter. I was hesitant to try the burrata because I had zero clue what it was (it’s mozzarella with cream if you were wondering) but it was the dark horse of the bunch. The potato soup came in as a close second and I wasn’t feeling the salad at all.

At this point my eyes were getting heavy, the pillow was calling my name and I was regretting not taking the “Dine and Rest” option but I wanted to go through every experience. So for my entrée I chose the Beef Short Rib Stracotto with horseradish mashed potatoes and root vegetable slaw. I’m glad I chose that option because I could have eaten it at least two more times.

Now it was time for dessert and everyone that knows me already knows what I got for dessert… ICE CREAM! It was honey vanilla with strawberry-balsamic caramel. Um yes please and when it came out I was not disappointed and was on cloud 9, literally.

As I finished everything, the flight attendant asked if I would like be woken up for breakfast. Of course the ambitious side of me said heck yeah, let’s do it and ordered the Potato and Parmesan Frittata and immediately fell asleep on the pillow which in my current stated felt like the most amazing pillow ever.

Now let’s fast forward 5 hours and see what future Thad had to say. He was not too pleased with the decision past Thad made and was super confused when someone woke him up. He quickly changed the meal to cereal and fruit and only was able to eat the croissant and a few pieces of fruit. Now it was time to land in London and begin the leg of the trip to Dubai.

BA Check In/Concorde Room

Now I was on land again only this time across the pond and I was ready to hit the ground running. The hardest part of check-in for me was actually getting to the right terminal but this due to my bad sense of direction.  The check-in process itself was quite easy because they have an express line for First and I was off to the London Concorde Room.

When I walked in I was amazed at how everything was laid out and was hands down the nicest lounge I’ve been in. I found a seat to settle in and checked my phone to see where Pete was and he sent me an email saying he would be a couple hours late That was okay because I am typically easily entertained.  So, I made a mimosa and explored the lounge while I waited for Pete to arrive to London. Once he arrived, we were off to our flight to Dubai and you can read about our dinner for two in the sky and why you shouldn’t fall asleep while the attendants are taking your order in Pete’s post about his experience to Dubai.
