How to pack a carry-on for extended travel

Traveling is stressful enough without having to worry about your checked back getting lost somewhere between home and your final destination. Whether you’re going to Florida for a long weekend or to Asia for two weeks, if you follow my tutorial you will be able to fit everything you need in your carry on and personal item. One checked bag these days averages $25, and even though the fee is waived because I am Executive Platinum 99.9% of the time I’ll only pack a carry-on for any trip I take. The following video will show you how to pack a carry-on for extended travel.

Key ideas for how to pack your carry-on

  1. Maximize Space – You will be able to fit more in a roll-aboard and a weekender than a roll-aboard and a backpack or briefcase
  2. Fold or roll your clothes – This one is personal preference. I personally think rolling takes up more space than folding, so I fold. Rolling will reduce crease marks, but all hotels have irons if you need them.
  3. Put any toiletries and your toothbrush in your personal item – this will allow you easier access should you want to brush your teeth or shower in a lounge along your journey.
  4. Jackets on the bottom – If you’re traveling with a jacket or blazer fold the arms into each other so the jacket is inside out. I always put my jackets in the bottom of my carry on because I believe it reduces the chance of wrinkles.

I was able to pack for a 10 day trip to the Maldives and Hong Kong, a month long stay in Pennsylvania, and now a 8 day trip to Singapore and Hong Kong all in my little carry-on. Sometimes the packing process is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle, but getting everything in you carry-on can save you time, stress, and money.

If you become a member of Fairmont Hotels’ free loyalty program you can have complimentary workout clothes and shoes provided in your room.
