The magical little town between two lakes, flanked by mountains where the paragliders fly all day long. Interlaken has long been a tourist destination due to its close proximity to some of the best skiing, hiking, and paragliding in the world. I wrote an entire itinerary to help you plan a trip to Interlaken, now we are going to dive deeper on where to stay in Interlaken by reviewing the Victoria Jungfrau Hotel.
If you do a quick search for best hotels in Interlaken, without a doubt Hotel Victoria Jungfrau will show up near the top of the results. Hotel Victoria Jungfrau is located almost directly in the middle of Interlaken’s two train stations. Interlaken is mostly flat, so it is an easy 7-10 minute walk from either train station even with luggage in tow. You’ll know when you arrive at Hotel Victoria Jungfrau because it is the largest and most grand hotel in Interlaken. Hotel Victoria Jungfrau’s location couldn’t be any better. It’s centrally located and within an easy walk of anywhere you’d want to go in Interlaken.
Walking in the front door of the Victoria Jungfrau you are greeted by a huge domed glass lobby that lets in a ton of natural light and makes the space feel gigantic. This large dome was built to connect two separate hotels, Hotel Victoria and Hotel Jungfrau. They merged into one hotel way back in 1899. We arrived at the same time as a few other guests, so after a short wait, we were shown to our room on the recently renovated Victoria side of the property.
I really wanted to have a view of the mountains, so I booked a Deluxe Junior Suite using booking.com, which included daily breakfast. We were instantly impressed with the classic feel with all of the modern amenities one could want at a hotel. The bed and pillows were the most comfortable we had on this whole trip through Europe, but my favorite part of our whole room was the huge balcony with views of the mountains and the field where all of the paragliders end their flight.
The bathroom was updated and spacious, except the shower which was quite small, but the large bathtub makes up for that. The toilet was one of the modern ones that the lid goes up and down on its own and the seat is heated, so you don’t have to worry about a cold bum in the middle of the night.
Before I talk about the wonderful Hotel Victoria Jungfrau Spa, I want to say that the robes in the guest rooms are some of my favorite robes ever. They were warm and soft and perfect for walking down to the spa from our room on the first floor. Hotel Victoria Jungfrau added the spa in the early ’90s but has constantly been improving it ever since. From the state of the art workout facility, with daily classes or personal training sessions available to the indoor tennis facility, to the absolutely epic indoor pool, it’s possible to plan an entire day at the Hotel Victoria Jungfrau Spa.
While we didn’t have time for any treatments at the spa the Victoria Jungfrau Spa has a long list of treatments from the Nescens Swiss Anti-Aging Science line, so you’re guaranteed to leave the spa feeling refreshed and revitalized.
Hotel Victoria Jungfrau has 5 bars and restaurants to choose from during your stay in Interlaken. Their signature restaurant La Terrasse is a classic fine-dining restaurant where chef Stefan Beer prepares a “local menu” with all of the ingredients sourced from within 40 km of the hotel. It really doesn’t get any fresher than that. Imagine fresh-caught salmon from the nearby lakes, locally foraged mushrooms from the nearby forests, and you can’t forget the incredible local wine to be paired with each course. We were not only impressed by the food but also the incredible atmosphere and service you get when dining at La Terrasse.
The other restaurant at Hotel Victoria Jungfrau is Ristorante Sapori. This Italian restaurant and pizzeria aims to highlight fresh spices, oils, and other ingredients to maximize flavors. While we didn’t eat at Sapori because we were heading to Italy for 10 days right after our short stay in Interlaken, the menu did look delicious.
The final notable stop on the culinary journey at Hotel Victoria Jungfrau is the Victoria Bar just off of the lobby. Victoria Bar is the perfect place to go before or after dinner and enjoy a cocktail and some live music. Victoria Bar was rated as one of the top 20 bars in all of Switzerland by Falstaff, so you won’t want to miss an opportunity to try one of their fantastic cocktails.
There is something about Swiss hospitality that is different than the rest of the world. Little touches like being shown to your room, making sure the food you ordered is perfect, and the overall helpful nature of all of the staff at Hotel Victoria Jungfrau made our experience even better.
From start to finish our stay at Hotel Victoria Jungfrau was wonderful. The bars and restaurants we tried rivaled that of any of the top hotels we have visited in Europe, and the service was better than most. If you are planning a trip to Interlaken, I cannot recommend Hotel Victoria Jungfrau enough.
