Hotel Review: Sonesta Ocean Point

Sunset from our room

[sgmb id=”1″]

For our honeymoon Mallory and I went to the beautiful Caribbean island of Saint Maarten (Martin). The island is half Dutch and half French. Our hotel Sonesta Ocean Point was the all inclusive adults only part of a Sonesta compound that included another family friendly hotel, Sonesta Maho Beach. Ocean Point is on top of a cliff overlooking Maho Bay where all of the international planes come in, which was quite a sight!

Ocean Point

Arrived in St. Maarten

We stayed in a sunset swim out suite, one of four first level suites that had a veranda with steps directly in to the large pool. Our suite faced west, so we also were able to enjoy the sunset every night. Our suite came with 24-hour butler service; they were very helpful in facilitating our excursions while on the island. They were also there to help with dinner reservations at one of the resort’s 5 dining options, room service, or if you were just too lazy to leave your lounge chair for a piña colada.

The room was beautiful: plenty of space, large shower, bath tub we didn’t use, and convenience being able to walk out of our room directly to the pool. They also had a little man-made beach on the side of the pool behind our room.

We made a point to try a couple of different options when it came to food at the resort. The first night there was a beach barbeque that included guests from both Ocean point and the family friendly resort, but our butler arranged for a private table for us. Mostly local cuisine, the barbeque was good, but nothing to write home about. The next night we decided to try Azul the resort’s signature restaurant, which is available only to Ocean Point guests. The food was pretty good, but again nothing special. There seemed to be an abundance of mosquitos around the Azul restaurant because at dinner I was getting bit, and breakfast the next morning it was so bad that I had to leave the restaurant and move to the beach area to finish my breakfast. The third night we ate at “The Point”, which was an Italian restaurant on the property, and neither Mallory nor myself particularly enjoyed our meals. Our final night in St. Maarten we went just outside our resort to a little French Restaurant called Le Petit Paris, which was fantastic. The service, food, and atmosphere were all much better than what we received at the resort restaurants.

Sonesta Ocean Point is a beautiful resort with a great butler staff. We were not very impressed with the dinner dining we experienced while we were there, but over all we would recommend the resort to our friends. Sonesta has a rewards program where $1 = 1 point and you can earn free nights with as little as 1750 points or 7 nights stay. Their top teir status is after 12 nights in a year.
